Learn German & live in your private teacher's home around Cologne with Home Language International! Home Language International (HLI) is a family-run business offering language courses in more than 20 languages in over 30 countries worldwide, including German lessons at an experienced private teacher's home in Germany. More than 5,000 students take advantage of our services every year. Ian Josephs, Danielle Josephs, their 5 adult children and an expert team of dedicated staff all put in very long hours for HLI. You stay in an experienced teacher's family home, have one-to-one German lessons and then continue to use the language during the rest of your stay in Cologne. Because you are the only student, you are guaranteed individual attention. The lessons are completely designed for you, so the teacher will focus exactly on what you need. Mealtime conversation, television and social contacts are all in German. All of our teachers in Germany have a university degree (or equivalent) and/or a recognised teaching certificate. All teachers have been visited by one of our local organisers. Their qualifications have been checked and their homes throughly inspected. During your stay in Cologne, a local organiser will monitor your progress and make sure your experience is both happy and successful. Home Language International (HLI) is accredited by the Accreditation Body for Language Services (ABLS), Association of Language Travel Organisations (ALTO), and UNOSEL.
The school is wonderfully situated on the left side of the Rhine River in the city center of Cologne at Hohenzollernring 88. The area is the main entertainment district of the city with countless bars, restaurants, pubs and theaters giving it a lively vibe and cosmopolitan flair but at the same it boasts to be one of the best neighborhoods to live in such as the very posh Friesenviertel. The school is surrounded by green and well maintained parks as well as small lake which invites students to take a time-out, relax or do some outdoorsy activity after having done their lessons. A popular destination is also the “MediaPark”, just 10 minutes by tram, home of over 250 companies of the media and communication industry like EMI Music Germany and the Westdeutscher Rundfunk. The famous Kölner Dom and the main station are just 10 minutes walking away.
The Carl Duisberg Training Center Cologne and headquarters are centrally located at the edge of the downtown area. A short walk will take you to the cathedral and the picturesque historic district. Your lodgings, train station or airport are all just a short subway or rapid transit train ride away. In the Cologne Training Center most of the classrooms are air conditioned and there is a media resource center at your disposal. You can have breakfast or lunch in our cafeteria, or eat at one of the numerous, reasonably priced restaurants nearby.
You think, it’ll take a long time to speak German well? You are right, but we can assure you, that it does not take as much time as to build a cathedral. 632 years passed before the construction of the most visited sight in Germany was finished – that is the Cologne Cathedral. Today the church is a genuine attraction. 157 meters high with room for 20,000 people. If we would undertake to build a cathedral like that nowadays, it would cost 10 billion Euro. The famous Cologne landmark is also a symbol of the town’s joie de vivre. The cathedral is surrounded by small lanes with restaurants, cafés and clubs. And having an ice-cream in summer while cooling your feet in the Rhine river is relaxing. The mighty cathedral towers will provide protection against sunburn.
Cologne, located on the banks of the Rhine River and with a population over 1 million, is the fourth largest city in Germany. The impressive Cologne Cathedral, the biggest Gothic church in northern Europe, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the landmark of the city. Cologne is known for its cheerful, cosmopolitan and tolerant spirit. In the summertime it offers a great variety of concerts, operas, dramas, musicals and open-air events, and the Rhine beckons visitors to take walks, bicycle trips or boat rides along its winding course. The Humboldt students are guests at the Cologne City Hostel, right across the river from the main train station and in view of the famous Cologne Cathedral. The program center features modern, high-quality equipment and facilities in a quiet but central location.
